Stellantis Kills the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, Ending America’s Only Plug-In Minivan
If you’ve been eyeing the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid for your next family hauler, you’d better act fast. Stellantis has officially pulled the plug on the only plug-in hybrid minivan sold in North America, and once dealer inventory dries up, it’s gone for good.
- As of the end of the 2025 model year, the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV has been officially discontinued, not paused or back-burnered.
- Parent company Stellantis announced a new powertrain strategy that phases out plug-in hybrids in North America and phases in extended-range electric vehicles.
- The Pacifica Hybrid offered an EPA-rated 82 MPGe, 32 miles of all-electric driving, and a total driving range of up to 520 miles.
Why Stellantis Is Walking Away From PHEVs
A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed the news, stating that “With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug-in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year.” The decision affects more than just the Pacifica. Stellantis sold three plug-in hybrid models in the United States last year, including the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Now they are all dead.
The Jeeps in particular had quality issues and faced numerous recalls. In November, Jeep recalled its PHEVs over a battery issue and warned owners not to park inside or charge their vehicles until a fix became available. Those headaches likely played a role in the company’s decision.
There’s also the money question. Buyers of these PHEVs can no longer take advantage of the $7,500 EV tax credit. The Trump administration’s discontinuation of the federal tax credit for electrified vehicles as of Sept. 30, 2025, made all plug-in vehicles less compelling.
What Made the Pacifica PHEV Special
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid wasn’t a niche experiment. It was a technical and market success that delivered an EPA-rated 82 MPGe, offered 32 miles of all-electric driving, and provided a total driving range of up to 520 miles. For families, that meant daily errands could often be handled without using a drop of fuel, while road trips required no planning or charging anxiety.
It was also the most spacious plug-in hybrid on the market when combining passenger and cargo volume. Add in effortless operation with no drive modes to manage, and it quietly became one of the most user-friendly electrified vehicles Stellantis ever built.
The 2026 Pacifica’s plug-in hybrid powertrain features Chrysler’s long-running Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 that acts as a generator for a system featuring two electric motors and an electrically variable transmission. It’s capable of 32 miles of electric-only range when its battery is fully charged.
The Gas-Only Pacifica Sticks Around
Don’t worry, the Pacifica itself isn’t going anywhere. The Pacifica’s other powertrain option is a traditional gas version of the V-6, mated to a nine-speed automatic that’s available with front or all-wheel drive.
A refreshed version of the Chrysler Pacifica is coming in the second quarter of this year, and a next-generation version of the family hauler remains in the works. Joining the Pacifica lineup for 2026 is a 100th Anniversary Edition, slotted just above the base trim level. This model celebrates Chrysler’s 1925 founding with a commemorative decal on the back of the van and some understated styling changes to the fascia and wheels.
With more than 180 honors and industry accolades, the Chrysler Pacifica is America’s most awarded minivan eight years running. As the first to introduce the minivan and through six generations of the vehicle, the Chrysler brand has innovated 117 minivan firsts.
What Comes Next for Stellantis Electrification
The first of Stellantis’s new extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) are due later this year with the launch of the Ram 1500 REV full-size pickup truck and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer three-row SUV. While the range-extender setup is also classified as a PHEV, it differs from traditional setups in that the gas engine never drives the wheels, instead serving as a generator for the battery, with the wheels powered exclusively by electric motors.
Could an EREV Pacifica happen? There’s one problem, as the EREV technology Stellantis has now is rear-wheel-drive based for the Ram and Jeep body-on-frame vehicles, a setup better suited for large trucks and vans according to Stellantis. That doesn’t mean that you couldn’t someday fit one to a front-drive, unibody construction minivan.
Tim Kuniskis from Stellantis told MotorTrend, “It is interesting technology. But we have not made any commitments about any kind of EREV technology on a Pacifica or anything other than what we have already said.”
Should You Grab a Pacifica PHEV While You Still Can?
For shoppers who want a plug-in hybrid minivan, time is now the enemy. Existing Pacifica Hybrid inventory is all that remains. Once dealer stock is gone, this segment-defining vehicle will be gone with it.
While Stellantis claims that there are no PHEV models available for the 2026 model year, a handful of 2026 Pacifica Hybrids have been found on dealership lots. If you’re in the market, now’s the time to hunt one down. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid didn’t just fill a gap in the minivan market, it created one. And starting in 2026, that gap will remain unfilled.
