Polestar just revealed its new flagship, and the 2026 Polestar 5 makes some serious promises. It’s an electric sedan that rockets off the line.

The Polestar 5 electric sedan cranks out 884 horsepower in Performance trim and hits 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. That puts it squarely against the Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and Tesla Model S. The 5 rides on a new bonded aluminum platform that Polestar claims is stiffer than some supercars, with torsional rigidity numbers that sound like engineering bragging rights.

Under the sleek body sits a 112-kWh battery that should deliver around 416 miles of range. The 800-volt architecture means fast charging at up to 350 kilowatts, taking you from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes if you find the right charger.
Inside, you get the typical Scandinavian minimalist setup with a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen running Android Automotive. But here’s the weird part, it uses a no rear window design, just like the Polestar 4. The 5 uses a digital rearview mirror instead. Polestar says ditching the glass gave rear passengers more headroom, but some reviewers aren’t sold on the tradeoff.

A luxury EV flagship that says close to the concept

The design stayed remarkably close to the Precept concept from 2020, losing only the suicide doors and camera mirrors. Pricing should start around $100,000 when it arrives late 2025 or early 2026. The catch? It’s built in China, so tariffs could push that number higher.

As the number suggests, this 884-horsepower electric car is the fifth entry in the Polestar lineup, showing up as an ambitious flagship to be a true Porsche Taycan competitor from the brand the branched away from Volvo. Two versions to choose from

The Performance trim will get all the headlines, but the Dual Motor version of the 2026 Polestar 5 could be the model that most drivers choose. Of course, at an estimated price range of $135,000 to $160,000, this isn’t a car that everyone can own. The Dual Motor version provides 748 horsepower while the Performance model reaches the 884-horsepower mark.

Of course, the scripts are flipped for the driving range, with the Dual Motor model reaching 416 miles and the Performance version offering 351 miles of driving range. These figures are from the WLTP test estimates, which are typically more generous than EPA driving range figures, which means you should expect 354 miles for the Dual Motor and 300 miles for the Performance version.

Disconnecting a motor when you don’t need it in the 2026 Polestar 5

Both versions of the 5 use dual-motor setups, but there’s a bit of a trick to them. In both versions, the rear electric motor can disconnect from the front motor to reduce drag and make the 5 a front-driver. This happens when the additional power isn’t necessary for the driving experience.

Controlling the power

The 2026 Polestar 5 offers a lot of power, and some drivers aren’t ready for it. Thankfully, the car is. The Performance model has MagneRide adaptive dampers to improve body control, and both trims fit with large brakes made of two-piece brake rotors and four-piston Brembo calipers in the front. These features help keep this incredible performance sedan under control when you push it hard.

Short on trunk space

The spacious cabin of the 2026 Polestar 5 has a drawback: its light on cargo space. The rear trunk only measures 13 cubic feet, which is tiny in a SUV-heavy automotive market. There’s also a small frunk which gives you two cubic feet of cargo space, but that’s still only 15 cubic feet in total. Thankfully, shoppers aren’t likely to buy this performance sedan for its cargo space.
