Lucid Finally Has an SUV People Want: Can the Gravity Save the Company?
The Lucid Gravity SUV sales have begun, and this new vehicle gives the Lucid brand an excellent expansion in the luxury EV market.
Lucid’s Gravity SUV is actually moving off lots, which is more than the Air sedan could say. We’ll dig into how Lucid is splitting production between its two models, why making a luxury electric SUV is harder than it looks, and whether adding an SUV really opens up enough new customers to matter. The Gravity might be Lucid’s best shot at survival, but that doesn’t mean the path forward is easy.
An SUV that makes sense
Lucid made its market in the electric vehicle world with the lineup of Air sedans that offer the longest driving range on a single charge of any EV on the market. Now, this brand has entered the luxury electric SUV market, which could be its best hopes at survival in a challenging EV world. The premium SUV segment is extremely competitive, but the automotive brand’s expansion into the SUV world could quickly put it at the top of the list for many drivers.
Why do strong Lucid Gravity SUV sales matter?
Strong sales matter for any automaker, but Lucid faces typical EV startup challenges that make electric vehicle scaling more difficult than when scaling up other vehicles. Toss in the change from an EV world with impressive growth to what we have now, and it makes sense for this brand to add an SUV to the lineup. Lucid Gravity SUV sales could quickly overtake those of the Lucid Air sedan, which would be great for the brand. Still, the Gravity will start out at nearly $100,000 and go up from there, reaching nearly $150,000 before you get to the very top of the price range.
Sedan vs. SUV
When you consider the comparison of the Air sedan vs the Gravity SUV, you’ll find many similarities. That doesn’t mean the Gravity is simply a bloated sedan, but you’ll find a cabin filled with upscale and luxurious items. The Lucid production strategy will begin with the base model and could work its way up to higher versions, much like the sedan. Does that mean we’ll see a Gravity Sapphire? Maybe. The Gravity has room for six or seven passengers with seats that fold flat to provide plenty of room for cargo.
Power for this new Lucid SUV
The Lucid Gravity SUV sales begin with the base model, which comes with dual-electric motors and standard AWD. A lower-trim RWD model could be added to the lineup later, but that will likely depend on the demand for such a vehicle. The Touring trim is where you get things started with 620 horsepower, while the Grand Touring gives you 828 horsepower for the drive. If you want more power, the Dream Edition model provides 1,070 horsepower, and the Sapphire (yep, there it is) delivers 1,234 horsepower for the drive. This only really leaves room for an RWD entry-level version called Pure that might have 480 horsepower on tap.
Driving range is a big push for Lucid Gravity SUV sales
The driving range won’t be quite as robust as the Air sedan at 516 miles, but the Grand Touring trim returns 450 miles of range, which is still better than the Rivian R1S and Tesla Model X. Additionally, the new Lucid Gravity SUV can charge quickly by adding up to 200 miles of driving range to the battery in only 15 minutes using a 350-kW connection.
Other boons to the potential success of Lucid Gravity SUV sales include a 0-60 MPH sprint of only 3.1 seconds and the ability to tow up to 6,000 pounds.
An upscale cabin to bring you in
The Gravity SUV builds on the reputation that Lucid has built of having impressive cabin materials and a tech-rich environment filled with the space, seating, and equipment desired. The second row can be a bench seat or a pair of captain’s chairs, ensuring you have room for six or seven passengers, making it a great vehicle for families looking for a comfortable and luxurious ride.
As you might expect from a high-end luxury electric SUV, the Gravity has the most updated and modern package of safety features and driver assists to keep you out of trouble on the road. If Lucid Gravity SUV sales are strong, there’s no telling what’s next for this EV startup.
Will the Lucid Gravity make its way into your driveway? This could be the high-end luxury electric SUV that has everything you want and need.
