Jeep’s Electric Wrangler Finally Has a Name and Launch Date
An electric Jeep needs a fitting name, and the new Jeep Recon electric is certainly the right name for an EV that can have some fun on the trails.
The Jeep Recon is coming late in 2025 as an all-electric alternative to the gas-powered Wrangler. It keeps the removable doors and serious off-road chops you’d expect from Jeep, but runs on batteries instead of gas. Here’s what we know about this electric trail machine built on Jeep’s new STLA Large platform.
The next evolution of Jeep
For a few years, Jeep has offered plug-in hybrid versions of its Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models, giving drivers a more efficient option, but Jeep is committed to delivering full-EV experiences for their electric off-road fun. This new electric Wrangler alternative will join some of the new Jeep EV models that arrived for 2025. The Recon is the off-road electric vehicle that is made by the brand that has dominated the trails for decades, bringing off-road driving to the masses with the original General Purpose (GP) vehicle that was used by the Army during World War II.
Is it a Recon or a Wrangler
This new Jeep Recon electric SUV will have some of the same features and qualities as the traditional Wrangler, including removable doors. It might be the first electric SUV with this feature, making it a groundbreaking vehicle. The new EV will be more than capable of driving over rocks and tough terrain, like the gas-powered counterpart, but the Recon will use an entirely electric powertrain, which will allow it to handle your adventures into the wilderness and return unscathed. It should also ride on knobby all-terrain tires, have an excellent AWD setup, and plenty of ground clearance to allow it to stand tall above the terrain.
More driving on the platform
Stellantis has developed a fantastic modular platform for the electric vehicles coming out of its various brands. The new Recon enters the Jeep electric lineup riding on the STLA Large platform, which supports either 400 or 800-volt electrical architecture. So far, Jeep hasn’t shared which one will be used for the Recon yet. Instead of the solid axles of the Wrangler, this new electric SUV will use a system that isn’t quite as antiquated.
While the solid axles used for the Jeep Wrangler are still suitable for off-roading and a great feature if the venerable Jeep, the new Recon should use a more sophisticated, fully independent suspension. This new suspension might have an adjustable ride height, which can be great when you need to travel over taller obstacles or lower the vehicle for on-road travel.
What powertrain will be used?
Like the electrical architecture, the powertrain being used in the new Jeep Recon electric is still uncertain. Stellantis has a few different possibilities with different electric motors and batteries that can make it possible for this new off-road Jeep to handle its time on the trails. The Wagoneer S, a large electric SUV, has a dual-motor setup with AWD and 600 horsepower. The same powertrain could make it into the Recon, but this electric Wrangler alternative needs to be capable of being used on the trails, which might mean using a lighter and smaller platform for trail riding.
Despite the power figures being uncertain, the new Recon will have four-wheel traction as part of the standard packaging, otherwise, why would it be an off-road SUV? It will also have electronic locking differentials that will help it perform better on the trails.
Is this the right time for another EV?
Although GM and Ford can handle the challenges associated with the current political climate and the slowing of EV sales, Stellantis might not have as much wiggle room. The company didn’t fare too well in 2024 and has been slow to bring other EVs, such as the Dodge Charger Daytona EV and Ram 1500 REV, to the market. In fact, many automakers have realized that PHEVs might be more acceptable and help with the transition to EVs from gas-powered vehicles than jumping into the electric deep end. This could delay the release of the new Jeep Recon electric SUV, but it could be a huge hit for those looking for such a vehicle.
When it arrives, the new Recon will compete against other models that offer off-roading features while utilizing all-electric driving platforms. This means going up against the GMC Hummer EV SUV, the Scout Traveler, and the Rivian R1S.
Lots of questions in the air
Stellantis hasn’t released the powertrain specs for the new Recon, we don’t know exactly when it will arrive on the market, and we don’t have the driving range, charging times, or exact price that will be associated with this SUV. Its been rumored that the new Recon will start at nearly $60,000 and a Launch Edition version could be the starting point at $70,000 with more equipment than other models.
These prices might seem a little high for an off-road Jeep, but considering the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer start at much higher prices, this could be an acceptable price point when this new Jeep finally arrives. The Jeep Recon electric will be the EV counterpart to the Wrangler, giving off-roaders a fantastic choice when it comes to their wilderness adventures. Of course, this also begs the question of how to charge in the woods, but that’s another discussion for another time.
